Name That Design Person!

Three months from today, Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day*. In advance of this holiday, we’ve invited a number of designers to share with us a long-lost kiddie pic. On the 8th of every month leading up to Mother's Day, we’re asking our readers to guess the identity of one featured baby.

We’ll post another baby picture on the 8th of March and April. The remaining photos will go up on the 8th of May. Write your guess in the comment line, first to guess the correct name, wins a Design Observer T-shirt

* With apologies to our readers in the UK, where "Mothering Sunday" occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which falls this year on April 3.

Too bad the focus is on the trees behind the baby. Is that why he/she looks so mad? :)
I have no idea who it could be...

With the little nose, it can't be anyone but David Carson.

Hmmm. Somewhere cold. Aspen, poplar or birch trees? An old blanket, a cardboard box. Issues of abandonment? or isolation. The photo, probably Brownie Box of mid-50s to mid-60s? Is the baby angry, or thoughtful?

It appears that this month's winner is the same as last month's winner. Congratulations to Eric Heiman from San Francisco. Since he's already won a Design Observer T-shirt, we are sending him instead a Designers Designing Design T-shirt from Bill Drenttel and Michael Bierut's class at Yale School of Management. (In the case, the SOM student hired someone from the school of art to design his logo submission, and received a A for business acumen.)

However, we are implementing new rules, which will appear in the fine print of future baby picture posts.

1) Only one name per comment. Shotgun approaches are not allowed.

2) Any entry which ignores the above rule, and guesses both a male and a female possibility in the same comment is also disallowed. Eric Heiman, you won and you couldn't even guess the sex? Shame on you.

3. Comments which appear to be thoughtful and include a plausible rationale for being put forward are encouraged, and may receive extra bonus points, maybe even extra T-Shirts.

4. Correct guesses after the winner has been announced suggest that the submitter is not reading the entire comment stream. Jeff and Timea lose points, and definitely do not win a T-Shirt.

5. Anyone who could be so wrong as to guess Winston Churchill might want to encourage smarter guesses by offering an entire font family from the Font Bureau as the prize for next month's contest.

More new rules are likely. Reader suggestions also welcome.

OK, OK, wait a minute. Shame on me? A blue coat, the photo out of focus—in terms of gender, it could have gone either way. (Marian was my first choice, if that makes any difference.)

Nonetheless, I humbly ask forgiveness and promise to play by these new rules next time.
