Dustin Yellin

In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook was catastrophically flooded. Dustin Yellin had just finished renovating an arts and cultural center he founded in Red Hook, called Pioneer Works. He watched from a rooftop across the street as Pioneer Works filled with water up to the neck. Pioneer Works survived, and is still going strong. So is Dustin Yellin, and his own artwork—sculptural paintings with often dystopian themes. His work has been featured in Lincoln Center for the New York City Ballet art series, and he’s been working with Google on virtual reality technology.

Debbie talks to Dustin about his busy life making art, while also running a non-profit cultural center.
