Design Matters from the Archive: Sarah Kay

Performance poet Sarah Kay used to spend a lot of time hanging out at the Bowery Poetry Club. The premier spoken word venue in New York City. She listened, and she learned. When she was fourteen years old she started performing her own poetry, and eventually joined the Bowery Poetry Club slam team. In the years since she has performed in major venues, and published several books, including B, which was ranked the number one selling poetry book on Amazon. She also founded Project Voice, an organization that uses spoken word poetry as a tool for literacy and youth empowerment.

Debbie talks to Sarah about poetry, her career, and teaching people to write. “People should be less afraid of writing bad poems.”
