Diffusion MRI measures the motion of water molecules in a live patient and can be used to infer the architecture of axons that carry information from one part of the brain to another. This image was acquired in a patient who has suffered a stroke in the thalamus, resulting in major disruptions to certain axon tracts, some of which are visible at the bottom of the figure.
