Dr. Isabel B. Wingate, Fairchild’s Dictionary of Textiles
New York: Fairchild Publications, 1967
“‘Trademarked terms, like “Dom-Bess” lose their protection when they become common words of the language, used as verbs, and spelled with lower case only. We sometimes don’t know whether or not such a term is trademarked. To avoid this problem, and the large possible fines arising from it, all keywords must be spelled in EVEN caps.’ ‘Let me use bold face u & lc instead beginning each individual word of every term with a capital.’ ‘You’re a genius.’ But I got more pleasure out of handling the titlepage exactly like an enlarged entry from the dictionary itself. And the binding, silkscreened in two colors on a gold cloth, gives me particular pleasure to this day. Handling an ordinary reference book like a Dictionary of Textiles in a way increasing its usefulness and appearance is more important to my way of thinking than producing a rare limited edition.”
