Allan Ullman, Night Man
New York: Random House, 1951
“A suspense novel taking place in an elevator; the night man is the elevator operator, and the chapter numbers become, of course, indicator figures of the rising cage, increasing the tension. Here is a little triumph of the designer’s art: the manuscript gave the building in which the action takes place, 17 stories, while there were 23 chapters. When the design identified, through the rising indicator figures, the floors of the building with the number of the chapters, the author, wordlessly, changed the number of the floors to 23.”
