Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Eastern harbor in Alexandria, Egypt, 2002.
Designer: Snohetta Hamza Consortium. Photographers: Nils Petter Dale, Andrea Calabretta.
The objective of reviving the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is to establish a comprehensive new research library to contain around 5 million volumes. The outer granite wall is inscribed—as though gouged out of clay—on all sides with modern-day Cuneiform letters. This is appropriate since the library contains the Calligraphy Center, which includes Cuneiform, Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Greek lettering from the pre-dynastic period to the digital age.
